Bellingham, WA, and Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

Popular hands-on demonstrations of optics and photonics technology including lasers and next-generation lighting drew visitors to the SPIE booth at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C., 28-29 April.

Hosted by Lockheed Martin in cooperation with more than 500 science organizations, the festival drew more than 150,000 visitors to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center over three days. SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, was an Official Partner of the festival.

SPIE participated in the Festival Finale Expo kick-off with an invitation-only “Sneak Peek Friday” on 27 April for underserved schools, homeschoolers, military families, and House and Senate members.

The SPIE booth ― featuring a giant kaleidoscope, laser graffiti, and ultraviolet beads ― was one of more than 500 exhibits offering hands-on activities for students of all ages.

SPIE Three Rivers Student Chapter members Cody Shukis, Josh Turner, Matt Bradnan, and Kimberly Amaya helped staff the SPIE booth, along with SPIE Fellows Carmiña Londoño and Mike Postek and society members Andrea Rosales-Garcia and Christopher Baldwin.

The USA Science and Engineering Festival supports the objectives of the Race to the Top initiative led by the U.S. Department of Education. The campaign emphasizes the need for:

Designing and implementing rigorous standards and high-quality assessments
Attracting and keeping effective teachers and leaders in America’s classrooms
Supporting data systems that inform decisions and improve instruction
Using innovation and effective approaches to turn -around struggling schools
Demonstrating and sustaining education reform.

SPIE programs target similar objectives to further science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Among them:

More than $ 440,000 in scholarships and educational outreach grants funded annually through the SPIE Educational Fund
Student Chapters and professional development programs
Tools for educators and students including hands-on projects, videos, and posters
Support for global programs such as Active Learning in Optics and Photonics, the Winter College in Optics and other programs at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, and programs providing free access to content in the SPIE Digital Library
Visiting Lecturer programs.

About SPIE

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. The Society serves nearly 225,000 constituents from approximately 150 countries, offering conferences, continuing education, books, journals, and a digital library in support of interdisciplinary information exchange, professional growth, and patent precedent. SPIE provided over $ 2.5 million in support of education and outreach programs in 2011.

Bethesda, Maryalnd (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

The Surgeon General reports that at least 80% of American adults have gum disease. Bacteria in the mouth at the very least causes cavities, but the same bacteria causes periodontal disease and can travel through ones bloodstream to other parts of the body causing or complicating systemic illnesses. According to the AAOSH (American Academy for Oral Systemic Health) 93% of people with gu disease are at risk for Diabetes.

They also note that gum disease increases the risk for Head and Neck Cancer along with an increased risk of premature death by 400-700%. Research has found an association between gum disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis, Pancreatic and Kidney Cancer, as well as the risk of a pregnant mother giving birth to a child with abnormal weight. According to Mayo Clinic, tooth loss and gum disease increases the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and High Blood Pressure, High Blood Pressure can cause a person to be 2x more likely to die from heart disease and 3x more likely to die by stroke.

The good news is “all of this risk can be reduced substantially” according to Dr. Mark Taff. “Removing plaque and tartar from ones teeth with regular brushing twice daily, along with consistent daily use of dental floss will prevent bacteria from finding a permanent home and substantially reduce inflammation.”

Anti-bacterial rinses in the form of mouth wash, gives your mouth an extra bacteria fighting boost. The American Stroke Association created the month long awareness campaign to assist the public in understanding the risks involved in not having regular dental visits.

According to Drs. Taff and Levine “some individuals who are at a higher risk for these illnesses may need to see a dentist more than twice yearly”.

When visiting our office, your health is our first priority. The entire team strives to provide the highest quality of gentle dental care and is committed to exeed all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Hazard Association) standards for disease and infection control.

About Taff & Levine D.D.S., P.A.

Dr Mark Taff and Dr. Brad Levine have been proudly serving the Bethesda, Maryland community for over 35 years. Both are graduates of the University of Maryland Dental School and are members of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and the Academy of Cosmetic Dentists. Their practice has been voted “The Best in Bethesda” by Bethesda Magazine, and is listed as a “Top Dental Practice” by Checkbook Magazine.

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 12, 2012

The official first-hand announcement happened during the employer branding conference, an event that gathered over 150 top executives within the HR and Marketing fields. Based on a survey of 59,643 undergraduate students, the rankings reveal the most attractive employers among undergraduates in specific fields of study, such as Business, Engineering, and IT (See Top 10 in each category below), as well as some interesting trends in the career goals of students.

Google on Top

Google once again took the top spot among business and IT majors, and also earned the number 5 spot in engineering. As an indication of Google’s staggering front-runner status among IT students, the Mountain View company was chosen as a preferred employer by 49% of students in that field. Compare that with the top employer in engineering, NASA, which was picked by 17% in its respective field. (See below for Top 10 Employers in Business, Engineering, IT, Natural Sciences, Humanities-Liberal Arts-Education)

Big Banks Hold Strong

Despite the tumultuous financial market and not so favorable press that the banking industry has received, banks have maintained their appeal among business students. Why? “That can be attributed to the fact that banks are still associated with high future earnings,” says Kortney Kutsop, Employer Branding Specialist at Universum. “That’s really important to business students and they see that as something that the banks offer.”

Top Career Goals: Work-Life Balance & Security

Continuing the trend of recent years, having work-life balance and a secure job were the top overall career goals among students. However, as work-life balance has become a hot-button issue in recruiting, a lot of questions have come up regarding what exactly work-life balance is.

To help clear things up, Universum analyzed what the term means to students. “This is a huge topic,” says Kutsop. “For a lot of executives there is a negative perception of the term, thinking that the young generation just wants to work less.” The results showed that the number one way that students define work-life balance is employers that demonstrate respect for employees. “For young people, it’s all about working in an environment where they feel comfortable to express themselves and they know that they and there colleagues will be respected,” says Kutsop.

Top 10—Business: 1. Google, 2. Apple, 3. Walt Disney Company, 4. Ernst & Young, 5. Deloitte, 6. J.P. Morgan, 7. Nike, 8. PwC, 9. Goldman Sachs, 10. KPMG LLP

Waterloo, ON, and New York, NY (PRWEB) May 02, 2012

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) are accepting research proposals for their joint Spring 2012 Grant Program, with grants ranging in value from $ 25,000 to $ 250,000.

This will be the fourth cycle of research grants to be issued under the program. To date, the organizations have awarded $ 17.8 million in grants since the program’s initial Fall 2010 round.

CIGI and INET seek to create an environment nourished by open discourse and to empower the next generation of scholars with the necessary support to accelerate and advance new and important thinking on economic issues. Grants will be awarded primarily to individuals or teams affiliated with academic institutions, think tanks, and other centres of vital research worldwide. CIGI and INET encourage scholars from around the world in economics as well as in related fields, such as political science, sociology, anthropology, history, and the physical sciences, to submit grant proposals.

In this round, CIGI and INET are primarily seeking to support research that is focused on four broad themes that are complementary to the organizations’ other activities and forthcoming research programs. The four key areas of research are: financial instability and macroeconomic management; the political economy of income and wealth distribution and inequality dynamics; governance of the international monetary and financial systems; and innovation.

While these are the key areas in which proposals will be funded, CIGI and INET will give due consideration to any proposal that is consistent with our mission of furthering new economic thinking.

Grant proposals are due by June 14, 2012. A research jury will review first stage applications and in early August will issue invitations for those with the most promising proposals to submit complete applications by early September 2012. Grants will be awarded by early November 2012.

The Institute for New Economic Thinking was created in 2009 to broaden and accelerate the development of a new field of economic thought that will lead to real world solutions to the great challenges of the 21st century. The havoc wrought by our recent global financial crisis has vividly demonstrated the deficiencies in our outdated economic theories and shown the need for new economic thinking – right now. INET is supporting this fundamental shift by directly funding research, building a powerful network of economic scholars, and spreading the word about the need for change. INET is a global community of thousands of new economic thinkers, ranging from Nobel Prize-winning economists to teachers and students, all attracted by the promise of a free and open economic discourse. For more information, please visit http://www.ineteconomics.org

The Centre for International Governance Innovation is an independent, non-partisan think tank on international governance. Led by experienced practitioners and distinguished academics, CIGI supports research, forms networks, advances policy debate and generates ideas for multilateral governance improvements. Conducting an active agenda of research, events and publications, CIGI’s interdisciplinary work includes collaboration with policy, business and academic communities around the world. CIGI was founded in 2001 by Jim Balsillie, then co-CEO of Research In Motion (RIM), and collaborates with and gratefully acknowledges support from a number of strategic partners, in particular the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
Dyce’s Fort Lauderdale guitar lessons for the college student on summer break can be purchased by the students themselves, or purchased as a gift. Students with no musical background are welcome, too: Dyce specializes in connecting with the absolute beginning guitar student. Dyce’s Weston guitar lessons are provided at his state-of the-art studio in Fort Lauderdale, convenient to Miami, Weston and Fort Lauderdale, or online via Skype.

Dyce Kimura is a premier musician, and Fort Lauderdale guitar teacher. Well-versed in all aspects of the current music industry, Dyce is hip to all of the latest music & technology trends, breaking artists, and contemporary gear. (Before Dyce committed full-time to teaching, he was an in-demand session player in Miami’s competitive studio scene, recording with scores of hip-hop, rock, blues and Christian artists—and is a nationally-recognized authority on the blues guitar).

Dyce’s lessons never bog down students with endless theory. Instead, he emphasizes hands-on teaching: from the very first lesson, Dyce’s students learn to play simple, lyrical grooves. By the end of the summer, they will be playing complete songs—that their friends will recognize, and can sing along with.

One university study conducted by the University of Toronto psychologists, and presented at the APA’s 2003 Annual Convention—using over 1,000 children at 50+ schools—illustrated that there are many benefits to studying music. Young people involved with music learn new languages quicker, learn to read more easily, socialize better with others—and perhaps best of all—enjoy school more than their classmates who don’t play music.

Summer break doesn’t have to mean a dead-end job, or spending days in front of the PlayStation. Learning the guitar with Dyce’s Fort Lauderdale guitar instruction for college kids can be a great way to spend the summer—all while providing them with lifelong skills.

(PRWEB) April 28, 2012

There are few times more critical in a student athlete’s career than when searching for college recruiting and athletic scholarships. This opportunity only comes once in a lifetime; the student will only be at this age one time. Parents have maybe three years to put together a high school recruiting plan for their student athlete that could save up to $ 200,000. Huge dollars. That sport scholarship game plan takes considerable thought and planning, including academic requirements, performance consistency, skills, determination and confidence.

“When considering college recruiting and sport scholarships, you can’t afford to make mistakes,” says Coach John Scott, president and CEO of Athletic Quest. “The pursuit for an athletic scholarship is a complex journey, and you only get one shot at it. That’s why parents and the student athlete need as much professional help as possible.

“One of the first questions I ask parents is, ‘Who would know more about college recruiting than a college coach?’ The answer is: An entire team of college coaches. And that’s the power of Athletic Quest. Our team is comprised of all coaches — the only team of its kind in the industry.”

Over the years the college coaches at Athletic Quest have heard thousands of questions — whether it’s about football recruiting, basketball recruiting, or college recruiting for any other sport. The following questions are what these coaches first ask of the parents.

(1) How many college coaches have contacted you?

If your answer is less than five, no one knows about your student athlete. You’re not on anyone’s college recruiting list and most colleges don’t have the budget to find you (typical college recruiting budgets are less than $ 2,000 per year).

Here’s a tip: If you haven’t received dozens of letters by your student’s sophomore year, your child may not be a Division I athlete, and only 10% of all college opportunities are NCAA Division I.

Here’s another bit of advice: There are over 2,000 colleges with athletic programs — you may not have heard of many of them, and chances are they haven’t heard of you either.

(2) How much money have you spent since your student was in the 8th grade on camps, tournaments, and showcases?

Be honest. In reflecting on how much money you’ve already spent, would you consider investing a few hundred to a few thousand dollars if it meant receiving a return of up to $ 200,000 for a four-year college education for your son or daughter? Investing that money may provide your student athlete with 20 or more legitimate college recruiting and athletic scholarship opportunities. That’s the power of Athletic Quest — bringing remarkable results for close to 100% of the students they accept into their program.

(3) As a parent, what’s your goal for your student athlete?

If your goal is to provide every opportunity for your son or daughter to get a better education and to have the best opportunities to play college sports, then Athletic Quest has a plan for success for you. The role of a parent in the development of a student athlete is to recognize that sports are a privilege and that academics come first. That’s critical. Parents need to be a positive polarization for the student and to support the student with tools and resources to help them develop as an athlete and scholar. Don’t demand that your son or daughter be perfect, but support them in their progress and efforts. Don’t live and die with every play on the field or court!

(4) How can I get my son/daughter noticed by college coaches?

Athletic Quest has a proven plan for both academic and athletic success. Our academic plan includes proper study habits and a path to elevating the grades of your daughter or son. We have a carefully constructed ‘road map’ built by academic specialists and college coaches that will take you and your child successfully down the college recruiting road. Nearly 100% of Athletic Quest clients get multiple offers from various college programs. Choose the right program for your needs, work with our resources and material, consult with our college coaches, and capitalize on our #1 rated college recruiting and sport scholarship website, http://www.athleticquest.net.

“You might think it’s interesting that I often talk about how few students we accept into our college recruiting and athletic scholarship program,” reports Coach Scott, “but I think it’s important to recognize that our program is very successful — 100% successful — and that’s because we only select the kids who are going to stay on point with our program. And of course parents play a major role in keeping them on point. We know what it takes, and we know how to recognize that potential in every individual student athlete. In fact, a former big wig in the recruiting industry from an industry competitor said, ‘You guys are the Rolls Royce of the industry because you’re the only ones who will turn people down.’

“We don’t evaluate just the athletic prowess of the student,” says Coach Scott. “We assess their weak points and show them know how to improve. We give them a window of time to follow for both academic and athletic goals. We do whatever it takes to keep them on track within the game plan.

“Another common question we get from parents,” continues Coach Scott, “is whether we can make sure the student is recruited by a specific college like Utah, USC, or Florida. Our answer is always no. However, if they’re that level of athlete and they hit their academic marks, then the answer may quickly toggle over to yes. What parents need to remember is that these colleges recruit that athlete’s player position every three years. And only 1 in 100 senior players in that position will go on to play Division I. There are no guarantees, other than the fact that we’ll always do our very best for each individual student.”

How much does this service cost? “Number one, we’re going to turn down three out of four athletes who want to become a college recruiting and athletic scholarship client of ours. So I wouldn’t worry about cost; I’d worry about whether or not you’re on track to see if a team of college coaches wants to accept you as a student athlete into our program. Here’s an eye-opener: It’s going to cost you $ 50,000 to $ 200,000 if you DON’T get some help to pay for college. If you do have a chance to work with us, you’re going to wind up investing a few hundred or a few thousand dollars. Where in the universe can you invest that kind of money and average an $ 84,000 return to pay for college?

“We also offer a money-back guarantee — who else does that? If you follow the game plan we outline and you don’t get back what you’ve invested with us in the form of offers from colleges, you’ll give you your money back.”

Caregiver Burnout Webinar for Family Caregivers

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

Home Care Assistance, North America’s leading provider of in-home care for seniors, is committed to providing family caregivers with the resources they need to manage their stress and prevent caregiver burnout. Last year, Home Care Assistance published the widely acclaimed Handbook of Live-In Care, which provides family caregivers with expert advice on caring for a loved one; the valuable resource spans everything from understanding the psychology of home-bound adults to practical how-to tips on assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing and grooming. This May, Home Care Assistance is excited to host a free, informational webinar, Caregiver Burnout and How to Protect Your Health, which will explore the challenges that family caregivers face and provide practical tips that individuals can apply to improve their own health and quality of life.

The webinar will be held on Tuesday, May 1st at 11:00 AM Pacific, 2 PM Eastern, and will be led by Dr. Jennifer Hoblyn, professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine and chief medical officer of eTherapi, an online therapy provider that connects adults seeking to improve their mental and emotional wellbeing to licensed therapists who provide counseling online via live video conferencing. To register for the Caregiver Burnout webinar, please visit http://www.homecareassistance.com/caregiver-burnout and reserve your spot today.

Caregiving has rapidly become a second profession for many individuals; nearly one in three adults provides ongoing care to an elderly or chronically frail loved one. The typical family caregiver is a 50 year old female, often married and employed, providing care for her elderly mother and father. Family caregivers are often juggling commitments to their work, their children, their family and friends and their communities alongside their caregiving responsibilities. Furthermore, they often lack or do not know where to seek the resources and support system needed to manage the stress associated with their responsibilities; it’s no wonder then that 46% of family caregivers suffer from clinically significant symptoms of depression and other forms of caregiver burnout. In addition to causing depression, caregiver burnout can lead to changes in energy, mood and diet; full-time caregiving can reduce an individual’s life expectancy by up to eight years. Education and awareness about caregiver burnout are important steps in prevention and control of this insidious and all too common problem.

“We’re so excited to have Dr. Hoblyn speak to our audience of thousands of family caregivers,” said Lily Sarafan, President of Home Care Assistance. “The vast majority of these individuals are so busy balancing their responsibilities as parents, spouses, professionals and caregivers that they don’t recognize the signs of burnout and the impact that it can have on their lives. Our mission at Home Care Assistance is to change the way the world ages; advocating for family caregivers and providing education around health and quality of life for these individuals is just one of the many ways we are fulfilling our mission.”

For individuals currently providing care for a family member or loved one, use Home Care Assistance’s Caregiver Burnout Checklist to self-evaluate the impact of caregiving on your life.
Home energy business expanding to U.K.

(PRWEB) April 23, 2012

Statistics from sources like the U.S Census, the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, and others reveal a growing trend in home based business start ups. Two of the more noteworthy statistics found are that more than 12% of households in the U.S. have a home based business, and the annual revenue generated from home based business owners exceeds $ 400 billion dollars.

The economy hasn’t been this bad in more than half a century and the U-6 unemployment rate has been in double digits for quite some time. The rising number of people stepping up and becoming entrepreneurs leads one to ask the question, “What is the best home based business?”

Determining the best home based business opportunity is somewhat subjective, as there are many factors that can be weighted differently by each individual. These include the following:

   Start up cost
Inventory requirements
Market size
Product or service fulfillment requirements
Compensation plan and profit potential
Residual income potential and attrition rates
Complexity of sales cycle

The best home business opportunity would include a low start up cost, no inventory requirements, a massive and ubiquitous market, a simple sales process that is easily duplicated, a compensation plan that leverages the work of others, and the potential for a large residual income with a very low attrition rate for the monthly services that contribute to that residual income.

From the many home based business opportunities that have been reviewed by Freedomfflow LLC, they have chosen Momentis as the best one as it has all of the metrics described above.

Let’s examine some of these items a bit more closely.

Most times the bulk of the start up cost is for purchasing inventory. More and more businesses do not require the business owner to hold significant inventory as the product is typically housed and fulfilled by a parent company the home business owner represents. Yet many of these same businesses require a monthly inventory purchase, typically called an “auto-ship,” by the business owner to maintain their status as a representative of the company. More than 90% of home based businesses that require such an auto-ship fail within the first six months as the business owner quits due to the monthly cost of purchasing this inventory and their inability to recoup that cost by selling it.

The market type and market size must be considered closely. Clearly, the bigger the market, the easier it should be to find customers. However, products considered luxury products or non-essential products are risky because they are the first to be cut when consumers tighten their budgets. These types of products also will have a higher attrition rate which leads to a short residual income potential. Health and wellness products are very viable as the massive baby-boomer segment of our population is focused on staying healthy and looking younger. Although these products and services are considered essential by many of the people who use them, in a very tough economy the juices, vitamins, and supplements are also likely to become expendable.

The best product for a home based business would not be a product at all. It would be a service, and it would be a service that the potential customer is already paying for. In this case, there is no new bill. To attract a customer for a service they are already using requires a better price or a better service, or both. Energy deregulation is creating that choice for a massive market place.

The Momentis opportunity enables a home based business owner to enter into the home energy market place. This market is over $ 500 billion dollars strong in North America. Momentis is soon to be expanding into the United Kingdom, expanding this massive market even further.

The basic concept is to direct a potential customer to a website where they can see the options they have to purchase electricity and natural gas. Deregulation of the energy industry allows competition and competition will drive down prices. The same infrastructure and local companies still deliver, bill, and service the energy buyer. However, the actual energy can be purchased from different suppliers at different rates.

Deregulation only happens once to an industry. It is happening right now to the energy industry. Momentis offers a very attractive vehicle to work from home in this market place. Momentis is looking to expand its energy customer base and has embraced relationship marketing as the vehicle to reach its expansion goals. This has opened the door for a growing number of people to start a home based business that offers many advantages including market size, product appeal, and earnings potential.

Furthermore, this opportunity is expanding from the North American continent to the European continent, starting in the U.K., and the current success and other signs point to a broader global expansion in the months ahead.
