Education Connection Debuts New College Competency Test

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) November 29, 2007

Education Connection, a leader in advising individuals who are looking to advance their careers through online education, announced today the debut of its new college competency test. The college competency test is the latest online education resource in Education Connection’s line of highly-effective self-assessment tests.

“We have found that many individuals who are interested in getting a degree from an online school aren’t sure if they are prepared academically for the experience,” said Todd Zipper, Chief Operations Officer for Education Connection. “Our goal in creating the College Competency Test is to allow consumers to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses so they can make a more informed decision both about going back to school and what course of remediation they should take when first entering school.”

The college competency test assesses potential students according to standards concurrent with the math and English requirements of a college freshman. Using a battery of proprietary questions and algorithms, the test scores prospective students similarly to how they would be graded on standard college-entrance exams.

“The test is graded using a similar matrix to the one used to grade the SAT and ACT tests.” said Zipper. In this way, they can better assess their academic proclivities and choose an online degree that is most reflective of their strengths.

Education Connection’s college competency test can be found at quiz.educationconnection.com.

QA InfoTech Talks About Uniqueness of Testing for Learning Applications

QA InfoTech Talks About Uniqueness of Testing for Learning Applications

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) June 09, 2011

QA InfoTech, a 500+ person independent quality assurance and software testing firm that focuses on testing for educational and publishing software has released today a set of elements that form the core of quality assurance for the learning domain. Given the increasing penetration of technology in education, they see enormous potential for Software Quality Assurance services in this domain

According to Mukesh Sharma, CEO of QA InfoTech Worldwide, “Software Testing approaches and methodologies have lately been undergoing a lot of customization to provide in-depth value added quality, specific to the domain a product falls under. While a core end-to-end test strategy can be leveraged to some extent to fit any product under test, such customization is becoming imperative to ensure product acceptance and success in the market place.” The company has identified these core elements for testing educational software, based on its 7+ years of experience testing for marquee brands in this space.

1.    Testing for Learnability – since the primary goal of learning software is to efficiently teach the subject to its target audience, testing for how learnable the software is, is a key. Thinking through how the instructional design needs to be done, testing for effectiveness of the story board are all required to ensure the software is designed to meet its goals. Usability testing to determine how intuitive the software is, is these days being done on most software. Usability testing extends itself further in learning applications to verify the learnability of the content.

2.    Testing for content – Although content testing is important for any software to ensure correct use of language and the right messaging to appeal to the audience, content for learning software goes an extra mile; strong subject matter experts are needed to create the content, and unless the content is correct, precise and effective in teaching the subject, the target cannot be reached well enough. That said, often content testing is compromised due to several challenges such as access to experts, lack of time and budget etc. Newer approaches to facilitate content testing are taking shape around areas such as crowd sourced testing; more on this has been outlined at: http://www.qainfotech.com/blog/2011/04/content-qa-%e2%80%93-is-this-really-required/

3.    Compatibility testing more important than in other applications – Given how learners are these days empowered to learn in a self sufficient mode including offline/anywhere/anytime learning, the use of devices to take on such courses has come to the limelight. This calls for testing the software on a wide yet optimized range of supported platforms and devices. Herein, besides core functionality testing, importance is given to the performance, security and usability aspects of the software under test.

4.    Role based testing very important – Specific to learning applications, a lot of roles come into existence such as teacher, student, administrator, evaluator etc. State transition testing, along the sequence of expected and unexpected paths are more important for learning applications in comparison to non-learning applications

5.    Out of Box thinking very critical in testing for learning applications because learners are often very varied in how they think, use a product and learn.

a.    Some might prefer offline disconnected learning

b.    Some might want online connected and interactive learning

c.    Some might go for offline yet connected learning

Thus as a tester, it is a good idea to give a lot of importance for ad-hoc testing on a regular basis to come up with creative scenarios to test. Periodic bug bashes inviting different end users is also a good idea to generate more usability based testing.

6.    Integration testing is very important as often times content comes from various sources; not all required feature set and content reside in the application under test. When such cross collaboration happens, there is a good chance integration scenarios might not work seamlessly, unless adequately tested and verified for. For e.g. a student may have downloaded some questions from a web application, some questions off a memory drive, some questions from a friend on a social network etc. to consolidate the set of questions he / she wants to prepare for. Such cross sharing of information and consolidation is often going to be supported by learning applications to make the learning experience holistic.

In addition to the core E2E functional testing, if one were to specifically keep in mind the above points in defining the test strategy for a learning application, the software will certainly be rich in its content and effective in its reach to the target audience.

DDL, which has experienced an average annual revenue increase of 25% since 2003, has moved up 8 places from its #50 position in the 2005 Growth 50. DDL attributes much of its growth to its ability to read the needs of its customers.

In 2006, important revisions were made to ISO 11607, the foremost guidance document for medical device package testing. DDL helped prepare and guide packaging professionals through these revisions with a series of 3 webinars. DDL has also just launched its “Industry Standards Alert” service, which invites industry professionals to sign up to receive a notification by email or by RSS feed when an industry standard is updated.

“DDL wants to be more than a package testing laboratory,” said John Hart, CEO of DDL Inc. “We want our customers to trust in DDL as an educational resource to guide them through their testing and ensure a positive outcome.”

More growth lies ahead for DDL, who recently announced its expansion into the Boston area. DDL sees much opportunity on the East Coast for medical device packaging services as the medical device industry continues to grow.

UK’s First LNAT Preparation Guide to Boost Fairness in New Compulsory University Admissions Tests

UK’s First LNAT Preparation Guide to Boost Fairness in New Compulsory University Admissions Tests

UK (PRWEB) August 24, 2004

Cataga Admissions Test Prep, the UK test preparation company, has published the first preparatory guide for the newly introduced UK University Admissions Tests in an attempt to make the tests as fair as possible by giving state school students the opportunity to prepare just as well as their private school counterparts. “Crack the LNAT” is the product of collaboration of leading UK and US education experts, academics and Oxbridge graduates. It is designed to provide high-quality, inexpensive preparation advice and practice tests for the National Admissions Tests for Law (LNAT), which is now compulsory for entry to nine top UK universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

The new Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test (BMAT) and the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT) have been introduced by the country’s top universities, including Cambridge and Oxford, as an additional selection tool for undergraduate applications. The tests have been launched amidst a heated debate about A-level result inflation and persistent performance gaps between private and state school students.

The National Admissions Tests are modelled on the example of the SAT –previously known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test – which has been used by US universities for decades. The tests will be held across the UK in early November 2004. They comprise of a multiple-choice section to assess students’ logic skills and an essay section to test writing proficiency and reasoning abilities.

The American SAT has often been criticized for emphasizing class and race differences because students with access to high-quality college consultants or to the services of the $ 250m SAT preparation industry can notably improve their scores by learning how to deal with the different sections. Critics of the UK National Admissons Tests have already voiced fears that the spread of US-style commercial coaching will reinforce the advantage of pupils from affluent backgrounds.

Cataga has stepped into what is still a niche market in the UK and published an inexpensive LNAT preparation guide, “Crack the LNAT”, which can be downloaded from http://www.cataga.co.uk and which offers insight into the National Admissions Test for Law. Emphasising that the LNAT is a learnable test, the authors encourage students to prepare well and, above all, practise. The book aims to familiarize students with the common question types and answering methods of the multiple choice section and to teach supreme essay-writing skills.

Selwyn Lim, the company’s director, believes that the LNAT will be very unforgiving on students who do not prepare. “Admission tests are inherently ‘unfair’. Students who have the opportunity to prepare well will always score better than students who don’t. The only tests impervious to preparation are genetic evaluations – not a pleasant thought! I am an advocate of the idea that human beings can make progress through effort.”

But he also stresses that high-quality test preparation should under no circumstances depend on financial affluence. “We believe that, by offering high-quality, affordable test preparation, we are contributing to making the new National Admissions Tests as fair as possible.”

“Crack the LNAT” is the result of a collaborative effort between education experts in the UK and the US. The Cataga team comprises of high-profile academics and graduates, mostly with 1st class honours degrees from Oxbridge colleges in subjects such as Law, PPE and Medicine. Additional contributions have been made by students who have obtained maximum scores in the American SATs.

Cataga also offers test preparation courses for both LNAT and BMAT. The preparation book for the BMAT, the BioMedical Admissions Test, is to be published in 2005.

ABOUT CATAGA

Cataga Ltd is the first company to provide National Admissions Tests preparation literature in the United Kingdom. The Cataga Test Preparation products are the result of collaborations between high-profile academics and education experts in the United Kingdom and the United States. The Cataga team consists of academics and graduates with 1st class honours degrees from Oxbridge Colleges in subjects such as Law, PPE and Medicine. The team also includes students who have achieved perfect scores in the American SATs and other aptitude tests.

The name CATAGA is an ironic expression of the company’s belief in the importance of effort to achieve goals. CATAGA is the linear sequencing of the four nucleic acid bases (C) cytosine, (A) adenine, (T) thymine and (G) guanine along the DNA strands that make up the genetic code of all genes.

Georgia Educator Certification Test Now Available Via Computer-Based Testing

Georgia Educator Certification Test Now Available Via Computer-Based Testing

Amherst, MA (PRWEB) May 4, 2010

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) announced today that the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators® (GACE®) Basic Skills assessment is now available via computer-based testing (CBT). Developed in collaboration with the education, technology and services company, Pearson, the GACE Basic Skills assessment is a test of candidate proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics. A passing score on the GACE Basic Skills assessment is used by institutions of higher education in Georgia as an admission requirement for entry into teacher preparation programs, as well as by the PSC as a requirement for prospective educators in Georgia to obtain their certification.

Delivered using innovative and secure test delivery technology, the GACE CBT allows candidates to schedule their tests at a time that is convenient for them at Pearson’s secure testing centers in Georgia and throughout the nation. Expanding access to Georgia’s educator certification test to candidates around the country will potentially grow the pool of certified teachers and leaders for Georgia’s schools.

“At the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, we collaborate with the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson on an ongoing basis to evaluate and expand our educator certification testing program to help ensure that our state has the best prepared and best qualified teachers and leaders for its classrooms,” said Kelly Henson, executive secretary. “Offering the GACE Basic Skills assessment via computer-based testing enhances the testing experience for candidates for educator certification in Georgia.”

Computer-based test delivery increases testing and registration opportunities. Candidates can schedule, reschedule or cancel their computer-based test up to 24 hours in advance of their appointment, providing them with the flexibility to take the test when they feel most prepared. In addition, computer-based testing allows candidates to receive immediate feedback for the reading and mathematics portions of the Basic Skills assessment. Prompt feedback and more convenient scheduling options provide candidates with greater flexibility in meeting their necessary requirements for entrance into teacher preparation programs and for earning their teaching certificate.

The Evaluation Systems group of Pearson, the most experienced provider of standards-based teacher certification testing programs, developed and manages the administration of Georgia’s overall educator certification testing program for assessing the knowledge and skills of public school educators.

“It is exciting to work with Mr. Henson and the Georgia PSC to use the power of technology to expand the reach of its educator certification testing program,” said William Gorth, Ph.D., president of the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson. “Computer-based testing offers benefits for candidates taking the tests, educator preparation programs and school districts hiring educators.”

Caveon Test Security Releases Results of 2006 State Education Test Security Survey

Caveon Test Security Releases Results of 2006 State Education Test Security Survey

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 23, 2006

Across the country, State Assessment Directors are spending 80% more time dealing with test security issues than they were in 2001, according to a survey conducted by Caveon Test Security, the nation’s premier provider of test security services. Results of the study were released today at the 36th Annual National Conference of Large-Scale Assessment being held here.

Caveon surveyed State Assessment Directors and staff across the country over the course of two months to determine trends, practices, and policies around test security efforts for state assessment programs. With 34 out of 50 states responding, results suggest that stolen test booklets, teacher or administrator coaching and collusion are in the forefront of testing concerns for state assessment programs.

Highlights of the survey results include:

80% of respondents said they are spending more time dealing with test security issues compared to five years ago.

77% of respondents said they have formal policies regarding cheating in place, but only 5% of respondents have a separate budget earmarked for specifically for test security.

50% of the respondents are conducting statistical analysis of their test results for the purpose of detecting testing anomalies and other indicators of cheating.

74% of the respondents viewed an outside, third-party review of their security procedures as beneficial.

40% of respondents are searching the Internet for stolen test content.

Over 80% of respondents have taken formal action when cheating has been confirmed or suspected.

Caveon President, Dr. John Fremer, said, “We are pleased to release the findings of our research in conjunction with this gathering of professionals working in high stakes testing. Test Security is an important focus for all State Assessment programs, and the good news is that efforts to enforce test security practices are on the rise. Sound consideration is being given to making testing more secure so that student testing yields fair and valid results.”

Parents ‘Get Smart About Tests’ With New Book From Rocklin Publications

Parents ‘Get Smart About Tests’ With New Book From Rocklin Publications

Solon, OH (PRWEB) April 26, 2011

‘GET SMART ABOUT TESTS’ by psychologist Joseph D. Rocchio, Ph.D. is an easy-to-understand guide to children’s educational and psychological testing that will get parents and teachers thinking like experts.

Tests can affect children’s lives in important ways, yet parents and teachers are surprisingly quiet when it comes to asking questions about tests. They aren’t asking questions because they don’t know what to ask…until now.

Standardized tests, such as IQ and achievement tests, are used more today than at any other time in our history. Educational tests are used to decide whether a student will be held back a year in school, diagnosed with a learning disability, admitted to advanced classes or to a gifted program, or even allowed to graduate from high school. And psychologically oriented tests will help to determine if a child is experiencing depression, anxiety, impulsivity, autism, social problems, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or any number of other conditions.

Described as “compulsively readable,” “long-overdue,” “insightful” and “eye-opening,” “GET SMART ABOUT TESTS” informs parents and teachers about educational and psychological testing in a clear and honest manner. It explains how to understand the most common types of test scores, whether IQ is really important, whether intelligence can be boosted, why important decisions should never be based on a single test, why we place so much faith in scores, how personality tests are used, what can done to help children improve their educational test results, and much more.

“GET SMART ABOUT TESTS” will also help parents and teachers cut through confusing and intimidating technical jargon, allowing them to ask relevant and probing questions about tests, scores, and the testing process. Ultimately, they will be able to make better educational decisions.

As an added feature, an appendix with descriptions of more than 100 commonly used tests is also included.

The author, Joseph D. Rocchio, is a licensed psychologist and test expert with a Ph.D. in Educational/School Psychology and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology. He currently serves as a consultant to schools and teaches graduate courses in psychology.

“GET SMART ABOUT TESTS” is available from amazon.com.
